Robert P. Chappell, Jr About our guest Speaker: Robert P. Chappell, Jr., is a 37-year-veteran law enforcement officer. He graduated from Radford University with a Bachelor Degree in Criminal Justice and earned a Master Degree in Strategic Studies from the U.S. Army War College. Chappell began the first 2 years of his career with the Blacksburg Police Department, where he was honored with the Virginia Chiefs of Police award for Valor in the Line of Duty. In 1987, Chappell transitioned to the Virginia State Police where he has served the Commonwealth for the past 33 years. He has served as a trooper, Narcotics Special Agent, uniformed Sergeant, First Sergeant, uniformed lieutenant, Assistant Special Agent-in-Charge with the Bureau of Criminal Investigation, uniformed Captain, and currently serves as the Captain and Director of the Office of Internal Affairs. He is considered to be an expert in the field of Child Identity Theft, and authored, “Child Identity Theft: What Every Parent Needs to Know.” Chappell is also a veteran of the Armed Forces having served 25 years with the United States Army Reserve, during which time he was awarded the Bronze Star, Army Combat Action Badge, 101st Airborne Air Assault combat patch, 11th Armored Cavalry combat patch, and the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment Order of the Combat Spur. Following deployment overseas to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom in 2005, Chappell retired in 2008 as a Lieutenant Colonel. In 2021, Chappell authored, “Rock Painting Therapy: A Soldier’s Journey to Improved Mental Health,” an autobiography detailing personal experiences during military service overseas, as well as the impact on transitioning stateside, in an effort to help break the stigma of Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
